Onboarding to the Campbell DNA Project

The Campbell DNA Project is focused on Y-DNA testing but welcomes any Campbell who has tested with Family Tree DNA. The project also welcomes autosomal testers (Family Finder, Ancestry, 23andMe), but help for these testers is primarily provided through our Campbell GEDMatch Facebook Group.

For Campbell YDNA testers and non-Campbells with strong Campbell matches, the Joining and Onboarding process involves the following steps.

  • Requesting to joining the Campbell Project at FTDNA, if they haven't already done so
  • Submitting a mini-genealogy
  • Making administrative adjustments to your profile
  • Adding your Campbell line to WikiTree

Requesting to Joining the Campbell Project

Case 1: If you have not yet ordered a YDNA test from FTDNA, you can request to Join the Campbell DNA Project and receive information about testing by clicking on the JOIN button at the top of the Campbell DNA Project Home Page

Case 2: If you have already ordered a YDNA test, you can request to join the Campbell Project from your MyFTDNA Home Page. The following Joining PDF leads you through this join process.

Submitting a Mini-Genealogy

After you join the project, YDNA participants will be asked to provide a short summary of their paternal line. Participants who provide a paternal lineage will receive a copy of those provided by other project participants. These lineages may greatly aid you in evaluating your DNA matches.

Making Administrative Adjustments to your Profile

To ensure that you get the maximum benefit from your testing, the Project suggests that you make the following adjustments to your MyFTDNA Account Settings.

  1. Account Settings – Set your Beneficiary to be the Group Project Administrator so others can benefit from your testing once you are gone.
  2. Genealogy – For your Earliest Known Ancestor, complete your Direct Paternal Ancestor and Paternal Ancestor Location
  3. Genealogy – For your Family Tree, link your FTDNA Results to a MyHeritage tree or your WikiTree ID if you have one.
  4. Project Preferences Opt-in (“On”) for Group participation and Anonymized Sharing
  5. Project Preferences – Edit the access for the Campbell Admins and set their access to Advanced Access.  Give future Group Administrators Advanced Access as well. This access will help use view your results and maintain the project for many years.

A short overview showing the adjustments to some of these settings can be viewed here à Updating Your Profile Settings.

Adding Your Campbell line to WikiTree

The Campbell Project encourages the use of WikiTree for sharing family trees.  WikiTree is entirely free and also supports the publishing of DNA results. Prior to entering your WikiTree ID, e.g., Campbell-37992, in your profile as described above, it is encouraged that you find or buildout your paternal line in WikiTree.
