Diarmid was educated in Scotland, and at Trinity College, Cambridge, England (BA architecture 1957), and also at UC Berkeley (MLA landscape architecture 1972).  Diarmid served as a 2nd/Lieut. in The Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders for military National Service, and spent nine months of it in South America.

He was the assistant Art Director at a film studio in Michigan, and later made PR film documentaries in the US, Europe, and Central America for the University of Wisconsin–Parkside. Diarmid worked in Scotland in the 1970's as a Landscape Architect supervising mining reclamation, and later in the US with an architect in Colorado where he designed houses. From the 1980's through the 1990's he was the Campus Architect on the Auraria Campus, Denver, Colorado

In 1983, Diarmid was named the Clan Campbell Society (North America)'s Clansman of the Year.

Working with Dr. Fred Campbell of Florida, Diarmid wrote, produced and directed the two disk DVD set CAMPBELL COUNTRY about the History of Argyll and the part it played in the formation and growth of the Clan Campbell. Diarmid retired to Argyll in 2000 and is completing a 5 volume history of his family, the Campbells of Inverawe and its branches. He is a regular volunteer at the Inveraray Castle Archives and remains active in the Clan Campbell Education Foundation in 2023.
